Scams in Barcelona
Barcelona is certainly not considered a dangerous city. You can walk about Barcelona at night without worrying in general, as well as this, there are people in the streets until 3 in the morning. Make sure you stay in apartments barcelona that are safe though!
You don’t read reports in the press about fatal stabbings, muggings and rapes, like you do in other cities like Rome for example. In fact, I have walked on my own at night through certain districts in the summer and not been worried, but you do have to have a certain level of common sense and awareness.
In Barcelona, it is a good idea to carry a bag that you can keep an eye on at all times. I wear one with a strap that goes across my front in order that I can keep my hand on it and avoid being pick pocketed. I have seen people too often on the metro with an unzipped handbag or a bag that you only hold by two thing handles, that aren’t even considered a challenge for thieves, they can steal these sorts of bags in less than five minutes.
It’s always wise to rent apartments in barcelona in the safest areas, although in general Barcelona is very safe. These district include El Borne, Eixample, Sant Antoni and Sagrada Familia, most of which are quite residential areas but have good access to the centre.
Now for the scams, two of which I will talk about today. The Friendship Bracelet scam: This is aimed principally at teenagers as they are less likely to argue. The scammer walks up to the mark in a crowded street like Las Ramblas and slips a little hoop of threads onto the mark’s finger. He then refuses to take it off until he has made the friendship bracelet, at which point he forces the mark to buy the bracelet. What a nightmare!
